San Diego Mosque Shooting Leaves Five Dead, Including Two Teen Suspects

A tragic shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego in California left five people dead on Monday, including two teenage suspects believed to have taken their own lives after the attack. Authorities are investigating the incident as a possible hate crime targeting one of the largest mosques in San Diego County.

Police said the violence erupted shortly before noon at the mosque complex located in the Clairemont area of San Diego. The attack shocked worshippers and residents, especially as it happened just days before the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha and the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

Following the report, police launched a search operation and increased patrols near local schools and shopping centers. However, before officers could locate the teenagers, emergency calls came in reporting gunfire at the mosque.

Chief Wahl said investigators are still working to determine the exact motive behind the attack. Authorities recovered a note from the suspect’s home, though its contents have not been publicly released. Officials noted that online hate speech and generalized extremist rhetoric may have contributed to concerns before the shooting occurred.

The Islamic Center of San Diego is one of the largest Muslim community centers in Southern California. In addition to serving as a place of worship, the complex houses Bright Horizon Academy, an Islamic educational institution for children.

Fortunately, all children attending classes at the academy during the shooting were safely evacuated and accounted for. Community members praised the quick response of law enforcement and school staff for helping prevent additional casualties.

Officials also credited the mosque’s security guard, who was among those killed, with potentially preventing an even greater tragedy. Authorities believe his actions may have slowed the attackers and allowed others inside the mosque to reach safety.

Within minutes of the first emergency calls, dozens of law enforcement officers from across the San Diego area arrived at the scene. Tactical units secured the mosque while officers searched nearby streets and buildings for the suspects.

Television footage showed heavily armed police officers surrounding the mosque complex, with snipers positioned on rooftops and patrol vehicles blocking nearby roads. Police confirmed that officers did not fire any shots during the operation.

Investigators are also examining another shooting incident that occurred nearby around the same time. A landscaper working just a few blocks away reported being shot at, though he escaped unharmed. Authorities believe the incidents may be connected.

The attack has intensified security concerns among Muslim communities across the United States, particularly amid rising tensions in the Middle East. Religious institutions, including mosques and synagogues, have increased security measures in recent months following growing fears of targeted violence.

Community leaders condemned the shooting and called for unity against hate and extremism. The imam of the Islamic Center described the attack as heartbreaking and unacceptable, emphasizing that places of worship should remain safe spaces for all people.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information related to the case to come forward. Police remain focused on uncovering what motivated the teenage suspects and whether additional warning signs may have been missed before the deadly attack.
