Nine Western countries have issued a strong warning to Israel over the continued expansion of settlements in the occupied West Bank, describing the developments as illegal under international law and harmful to future peace efforts in the region.
The joint statement, released on Friday by the governments of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, and the Netherlands, expressed growing concern over worsening tensions in the occupied Palestinian territories. The countries said the current situation is threatening regional stability and making a peaceful two-state solution increasingly difficult to achieve.
According to the statement, settler violence against Palestinians has sharply increased in recent months, while Israeli government policies continue to strengthen control over occupied land. The nations warned that these actions are deepening divisions and fueling instability across the West Bank.
The statement also highlighted concerns about plans to expand settlement construction in the E1 area, located east of occupied East Jerusalem. The proposed development would connect the large Ma’ale Adumim settlement with Jerusalem, effectively splitting the occupied West Bank into separate sections and isolating Palestinian communities from one another.
World leaders involved in the statement stressed that settlements built on occupied Palestinian land are considered illegal under international law. They warned businesses and construction companies against participating in projects linked to settlement expansion, especially in the E1 zone. The governments cautioned that companies involved could face legal risks as well as reputational damage for contributing to activities viewed as violations of international law.
The E1 project has remained one of the most controversial settlement plans for years due to its strategic location. The diplomatic warning comes during a period of increasingly strained relations between Israel and several Western allies. Tensions rose further after footage circulated online showing foreign activists detained by Israeli forces following an attempt to reach Gaza by sea.
The activists had reportedly been intercepted in international waters while participating in a flotilla aimed at delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza. Video footage later released by Israeli officials showed several detainees kneeling with cable ties around their hands while loud music played in the background. The images sparked criticism from several governments and human rights advocates.
