At least 37 people have been killed following an overnight Russian drone attack on a warehouse near Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, according to Ukrainian officials.
The attack hit an area in the Bucha district, west of Kyiv, where a warehouse was reportedly storing explosive materials. The strike was followed by a large detonation and a fire that spread toward nearby homes and other buildings.
Kyiv region Governor Tymur Tkachenko said the death toll had risen to 37 as emergency crews continued search and rescue operations at the site. Dozens of people were also reported injured.
The attack caused significant damage across the surrounding area. At least 50 residential buildings were damaged, while the resulting fire affected homes and a restaurant. Authorities evacuated nearly 400 people from areas close to the warehouse as emergency services worked to secure the scene.
Among those killed was Taras Didych, the mayor of the village of Dmytrivska, according to regional officials.
Warehouse Explosion Raises Safety Questions
Ukrainian prosecutors have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the warehouse explosion. Officials said the facility appeared to contain explosive objects and materials.
The investigation will examine whether the materials were legally stored at the site and whether the company operating the facility had the required permits and safety approvals.
Questions have also been raised over why ammunition or other explosive materials were being kept close to residential communities.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the Russian attack was followed by a detonation and confirmed that criminal proceedings would be launched. He stressed that ammunition should not be stored close to homes and other populated areas.

Previous Munitions Depot Incident
The latest explosion has drawn comparisons with another deadly incident involving a munitions depot near Kyiv earlier this year.
Prime Minister Sergii Koretskyi said authorities should have learned from the previous tragedy. He argued that repeating safety mistakes during the fifth year of Russia’s full-scale invasion could amount to criminal negligence.
Koretskyi called for those responsible for safety failures to face serious consequences and said authorities must take steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The investigation is expected to determine whether storage regulations were ignored and whether officials or companies responsible for the facility failed to meet required safety standards.
Russia Launches Large Drone and Missile Attack
The warehouse strike was part of a much wider Russian attack on Ukraine.
According to Ukraine’s Air Force, Russia launched at least two missiles and 267 drones between late Friday and early Saturday. Several regions came under attack as Russian forces continued their long-range strikes.
Other Russian attacks killed three people in and around Kyiv, including a two-year-old child and a 14-year-old girl, according to Ukrainian officials.
The latest attacks highlight the continuing danger faced by civilians as Russia and Ukraine exchange increasingly large waves of missiles and drones.
Ukrainian Drone Attacks Hit Russia
Ukraine has also continued launching long-range drone attacks against targets inside Russian-controlled and Russian territory.
In Russia’s Belgorod region, local authorities reported that a Ukrainian drone attack killed at least three people and injured nine others. Three of the injured were reportedly in serious condition.
Another person was killed and three others were injured following a Ukrainian drone attack in Sevastopol, a city in Crimea that Russia claims as its territory.
Both sides have increasingly targeted infrastructure far from the immediate front lines. Warehouses, oil facilities, ports, logistics centers and other strategic sites have become frequent targets.
The growing use of long-range drones has expanded the geographic reach of the Russia-Ukraine war and increased the risk to civilian communities.
The deadly attack near Kyiv underscores the continuing humanitarian cost of the conflict. As Russia and Ukraine intensify their long-range strikes, civilians remain vulnerable to explosions, fires and damage to homes and essential infrastructure.
