DR Congo’s Ebola outbreak has killed 2,325 people, becoming the country’s deadliest as cases rise and health teams struggle to contain the virus.

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) has become the deadliest Ebola outbreak in the country’s history, with 2,325 people reported dead and thousands more infected.
Health authorities said the number of confirmed Ebola infections has reached 4,945, including 101 new cases recorded within a single 24-hour period. The rapid increase has raised concerns that the outbreak could become increasingly difficult to control unless emergency measures are expanded quickly.
The current outbreak is the 17th Ebola outbreak recorded in DR Congo. It has already surpassed the previous record for the highest number of cases in the country, which was set during the 2018–2020 outbreak. That earlier crisis resulted in 2,299 deaths.
The latest figures show that the current outbreak has now exceeded that death toll, making it the deadliest Ebola outbreak ever recorded in DR Congo.
Health experts are warning that the virus is spreading faster than response teams can contain it. Difficult terrain, limited healthcare facilities, shortages of medical resources and insecurity in some affected areas are making it harder to identify patients, trace contacts and provide treatment.
The outbreak was officially declared on May 15, but the number of infections has continued to climb. Communities in remote areas are particularly vulnerable because patients may have difficulty reaching healthcare facilities quickly.
Another major concern is the rising case fatality ratio, which measures the percentage of confirmed patients who die from the disease. Government figures indicate that the fatality rate has increased from roughly 20 percent in early June to about 46 percent.
That means nearly half of the people confirmed to have Ebola are currently dying from the infection.
Public health specialists say the high fatality rate is partly linked to the late detection of patients. In a typical Ebola outbreak, earlier diagnosis, improved contact tracing and faster treatment can help reduce deaths. However, many patients in the current crisis are being identified only after becoming seriously ill, while some cases are discovered after deaths occur within communities.
Late detection creates additional challenges because Ebola treatment is generally more effective when patients receive medical care as early as possible.
The current outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo species of Ebola virus. Unlike some other Ebola virus strains, there are currently no approved vaccines or treatments specifically available for this species, increasing the pressure on health authorities to strengthen prevention, surveillance and supportive care.
Researchers are evaluating experimental vaccines and treatments, while scientists are also examining whether existing Ebola therapies could provide some protection. However, evidence for potential treatments against this particular strain remains limited.
The situation has also been complicated by conflict and insecurity in areas close to DR Congo’s borders with South Sudan, Uganda and Rwanda. These conditions can restrict movement by healthcare workers and make it more difficult to reach vulnerable communities.
Ebola spreads through contact with infected bodily fluids, particularly when people care for sick family members or handle the bodies of people who have died from the disease. Strong infection-control procedures, safe burials, contact tracing and rapid isolation of suspected cases are therefore essential to slowing transmission.
The rapid growth of the outbreak has renewed fears of a much wider Ebola health crisis. The major West African Ebola epidemic between 2014 and 2016 killed more than 11,000 people and demonstrated how quickly the disease can overwhelm healthcare systems when transmission continues unchecked.
For DR Congo, the latest outbreak represents another major test of its public health system. The increasing number of cases and deaths highlights the need for faster diagnosis, expanded healthcare capacity, stronger community awareness and sustained international support.
Health authorities face a race against time to slow transmission before the virus spreads further into new communities.
With Ebola cases and deaths continuing to rise, controlling the outbreak will depend on rapid detection, effective medical care, community cooperation and coordinated public health efforts.
