A football match official who was being considered for the upcoming FIFA World Cup has been removed from selection following an arrest in the United Kingdom over an alleged sexual assault.
Global football governing body FIFA confirmed it is aware of the “serious allegation” and stated that the referee will not be assigned to any matches in FIFA competitions while the matter is under investigation.
The alleged incident reportedly took place at a hotel during the official’s visit to the UK for a European fixture. Authorities have launched an active investigation, and further details about the case remain limited. The identity of the referee has not been disclosed.
European football authority UEFA also addressed the situation, confirming that the official will not be appointed to any of its matches until the investigation is concluded. The organization emphasized that it is closely monitoring developments.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be hosted across United States, Canada, and Mexico, will feature an expanded format with over 100 matches. FIFA had recently released its list of selected referees and officials, but this individual will no longer be included.
According to reports, law enforcement in London has released a man in his 30s on bail as inquiries continue.
