UEFA has handed Gianluca Prestianni a six-match suspension following discriminatory behavior during a Champions League match against Real Madrid.
The incident took place in February during a playoff first-leg match, where Prestianni was accused of making offensive remarks toward Vinicius Junior. UEFA confirmed that the conduct was considered discriminatory, including homophobic language.
Match Incident and Investigation
The match was briefly halted for around 11 minutes shortly after Vinicius scored the opening goal in the second half. Broadcast footage showed Prestianni covering his mouth while speaking, prompting concern from players on the pitch.
While Prestianni denied making any racist comment, stating his words were misunderstood, teammates and opponents reported hearing offensive language. Aurelien Tchouameni later said that Prestianni admitted to using a homophobic remark rather than a racial slur.

Details of the Ban
UEFA’s disciplinary decision includes:
- A six-match suspension
- Three matches fully enforced
- Three additional matches suspended, subject to a two-year probation period
- One match already served as a provisional suspension
UEFA has also requested FIFA to extend the ban globally, which could impact Prestianni’s participation in international fixtures.
Impact on Club and International Career
Benfica confirmed they have been notified of the sanction. The remaining matches of the active suspension must be served in UEFA competitions or official matches under FIFA jurisdiction.
Prestianni has limited international experience, having made a single appearance for Argentina national football team in a friendly match against Angola.
