Real Madrid looked in control for large portions of the game but struggled to turn possession into clear scoring chances. After a slow and uneventful first half, the breakthrough finally arrived early in the second period. Midfielder Federico Valverde opened the scoring in the 51st minute with a low strike from outside the box. However, what seemed like a routine save turned into a costly mistake, as Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga let the ball slip through his hands.
Despite taking the lead, Real Madrid couldn’t maintain their advantage. Just over ten minutes later, Thomas Lemar brought Girona level with a brilliant individual effort. Cutting in from the right, he fired a powerful shot from the edge of the area that beat goalkeeper Andriy Lunin and found the inside of the post.
Real Madrid entered the match under pressure after a recent loss to RCD Mallorca, which had already dented their title ambitions. Manager Álvaro Arbeloa chose to field a strong lineup despite an important UEFA Champions League clash against Bayern Munich approaching. The Spanish side will need to overturn a 2-1 deficit in the upcoming second leg.

Star players including Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior, and Jude Bellingham were all in the starting lineup, but the team lacked sharpness in attack. While they dominated possession, their build-up play lacked creativity and urgency, especially in the final third.
Girona, on the other hand, remained disciplined throughout the match. They defended deep and looked to counterattack when possible. Before halftime, Azzedine Ounahi nearly gave them the lead, but Lunin reacted quickly to deny his powerful shot from close range.
As the game progressed, Real Madrid pushed for a winning goal, but their efforts became increasingly rushed and disorganized. Girona’s defensive structure held firm, frustrating the home side and silencing the crowd.
By the final whistle, tension filled the stadium as fans expressed their disappointment. With Barcelona now sitting on 76 points—six ahead of second-placed Real Madrid, who have played an extra game—the title race appears to be slipping away. Barcelona’s upcoming match against RCD Espanyol could see them extend their lead even further, making the path to the title even more difficult for their rivals.
